Be careful with Twillow, I signed up with some very specific keywords and used Auto Follow.

I automatically started following a few new people, I looked through their tweets - none of them had used any of my keywords.

I did a manual search on my keywords and found tweets by users I wasn't following so clearly the tool doesn't work.

To make it worse, I looked for a freind's account - he too is using Twillow with a completely different set of keywords and he too has the same new inrelevant users on his following list.

The new users are mostly spam account, people posting links to things you might want to buy. I also got a high number of direct message offering me various products.

It seems that by using the Auto Follow tool you end up following Twillow's approved list of dodgy Twitter accounts - half of them don't even speak English!

I tried to contact Twillow but my email bounced back.
  • Twillow.net has many other tools on one site for twitter

  • Yes it does, but one of it's features makes it very easy to setup spam accounts and that's why I used it as an example.
  • Good slide show! The Twillow part was my favorite with the "X" through spam.
I'll make sure to stick a reference to this in what NOT to do on twitter during my presentations.
  • Awesome, I'm glad you liked it, feel free to use it all you want, with attribution of course ;)
  • Hahaha... this is great!

Thanks for putting this together. One of the best reads of 2009 for sure!

Did you do the illustrations as well?

In all seriousness however, I sure hope Twitter gets a handle on all this spam going on before twitter becomes the too polluted like MySpace did.

  • Thanks Doc :) I'm very happy to hear that it's one of the best reads of 2009. Yes I did the illustrations myself. They started out as post-it notes and became this in the course of 24 hours.

I hear ya about the Spam, I hope Twitter gets something in place soon.
